Happy Thanksgiving to all our members and their families.
The purpose of our Chapter is to promote the best interest and welfare of retired Clearlake teachers; to promote sociability, friendship and contact among colleagues; to promote mutual assistance and cooperation with other organizations with which it is associated and to promote the aim and objectives of the Clearlake United Teachers and its national affiliates.
It's great to be able to communicate information about our organization over the Internet. Any member -- or anyone interested in our group -- no matter where they are in the Country or even the world, for that matter, can see what we are doing and planning as long as they have access to a computer connected to the Net. Many of us, however, do have some anxiety about sharing information about our individual activities to any hidden stranger who happens to come upon our site. To help protect our privacy, we have chosen to identify specific members by their first name and only the initial of their last names.
In September our newsletter was mailed to members and potential members in our area. Can you believe that we identified almost 400 former Clearlake teachers living in the Tampa Bay area, and that does not even include the New York City teachers who are members of IFT? I hasten to let you know that they do have meetings also but they meet in Sarasota and we have at least seven who are among our favorites in our Unit.
Beginning December, we will be mailing the Newsletter to paid members only. You will, of course, continue to receive Odds n Ends, the publication of Council 112, but it is not possible for us to send our newsletter to those who have not paid dues; so I urge you to send in your application and pay your dues now if you have not already done so. I wish it were true that retirees do not need to pay dues, but, you know we can not send notices, offer programs, and keep you informed unless we have a treasury.
Your membership is important to all of us. We do recognize that the participation of each one may differ, but all members are equally important. Your membership counts and together we can accomplish what we are all interested in.
I subscribe to the Mayo Clinic Health Letter and in the November issue there was an interesting report on the relationship of living longer and strong social support. In a study of nearly 7000 Californians over a period of 17 years, they found that those lacking social connections were two to three times more likely to die prematurely than those socially involved. There is much to be gained by joining organizations, by volunteering, by taking an active part in what you are interested in. It is not a matter of doing less because you are getting older; it is that you are getting older because you are doing less. Please take an active role.
Congratulations to Philip M. The Board of Governors of the Phi Sigma Kappa Educational Foundation at the Second Legislative Council honored Tom M. with the Foundation's Distinguished Service Award for outstanding service to the Foundation. There are only 14 individuals so honored in the 30-year existence of the Foundation.
The Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Phi Sigma Kappa, the professional education association. It awards scholarships to high school seniors planning on an educational career, to members of the profession working toward a Ph.D. or Ed.D to help defray costs of the dissertation and to educators for travel on Association-sponsored educational trips to foreign countries.
The foundation also publishes monographs, books and "fast backs" on current topics for the members of the Association -- 103,000 strong.
Just in case you do not know it, let me tell you. One of the many people who works for our Unit, behind the scenes, is Richard G. It would be hard to operate a Unit like ours without the help he offers our group. Richard has been maintaining a database for us. He makes changes in the status of each person listed and we do now have close to 400 retired New York teachers in our records. Each time there is a change in address or phone or member status, he is notified and the change is made. He prepares the mailing labels for each of the newsletters and the lists of membership for the officers who need them for their work. Please join me in letting Richard G. know how much he is appreciated. We sincerely thank you, Richard.
